Writing Samples
If you are prone to nausea, as I am, I would suggest that you take a nice, long breath of air in between reading the following;
The mere thought of chewing an insect will disgust the majority of people living in the western world. However, eating insects (entomaphagy) is not only practiced by cultures all around the world, but considered a delicacy by millions.
On a nutritional level, insects are protein on wheels…well, actually, tiny little spider like legs. Yuck!
A variety of American companies sell chocolate covered insects. The company Educational Innovations sells packages of four completely edible, farm raised chocolate covered insects (two crickets and two larva) which they claim “taste like popcorn” for a mere $2.25.
Fluker Farms claims to “oven roast their crickets to perfection” before smothering them with the finest chocolate available. That is so thoughtful of them, doncha think? Ugh!
I liken my feelings on the matter to the attitude taken by the princess character in Hans Christian Andersen’s The Princess And The Pea. Although she slept on thousands of mattresses on top of a single pea, she still knew that the pea existed and was bothered by it. I don’t care if insects are massaged and sung to prior to being killed, rolled into a velvety fondue and baked by Belgians, they’re still icky, creepy crawlers to me! I’m sticking to M&M’s, thank you very much!
However, I do think chocolate covered insects are practical for the following uses;
